Handset Detection
Dear All, I'm using Nokia N73 to access the script, but the result shown my mobile is Nokia N80. Any thought? Thanks.

Hi Cable65, Thats strange - There must be a N73 user agent which we dont have in the database. The fuzzy matching probably finds a close match on the N80 so returns that result. I'll dig a bit deeper and check it out. Thanks for the heads up. Cheers Richard

Handset Detection

I seem to be seeing mis-detection as a fairly common problem. I tried detection with a Samsung BlackJack using the Opera browser, which returned as an HTC device. Another test using the same device with the IE browser returned as the proper device, but the wrong OS (Windows Mobile 5.0 instead of 6.1).  A Nexus One using the standard browser failed to detect as a mobile device and a Motorola Droid detected as Android Generic.

I bring up these concerns as I'm trying to use this detection for platform/version specific downloads and it seems like the accuracy might be a bit too far off for this type of application.

Handset Detection

Hi,

Thanks for bringing those issues to my attention.

The samsung blackjack issue is unusual. We may have a wayward user-agent tagged against a HTC. If you can browse over to http://www.teleport.com.au/headertest.php - That will email the headers to us and we'll be able to investigate in more detail.

I've investigated the Windows Mobile issue and you're quite right - there's a 100 or so handsets missclassified as 5 instead of 6 or 6.1 - which we'll fix promptly along with the Nexus one issue.

On the Droid front there were about 30 Droids classified between January and April that were incorrectly tagged as android_generic - which I have updated.

Thanks heaps for mentioning those issues, it helps make Handset Detection better so its important for us to get that feedback. :-)

Cheers

Richard

Something that I realized after my first post was that the Windows Mobile device that I am using is actually a Samsung Jack (SGH i637) but the model name popping up in the stats is BlackJack.

I believe the HTC issue is probably stemming from using the Opera browser. I visited the link you provided and the UA for the Opera browser doesn't have any device specific data in it so it must be associating itself with another entry with the same UA.

I'll be sure to let you know about any other inconsistencies I run across.

Thanks

I'll check into that Jack / Blackjack issue. In the mean time we'll be rolling out a patch for the Windows Mobile devices next week. It will address the OS issues plus it opened a whole can of worms around classifying Internet Explorer Mobile browsers and what version numbers we should be giving them. The upshot is that pretty much all browser versions will change for Windows mobile devices to match the OS versions (and not directly using the IEMobile tag from the user agent - using it as more of a hint).
